Give Me Liberty (from developers) or Give Me Death!

Ok, maybe this revolution is not QUITE as serious as Patrick Henry’s but it is a revolution none-the-less my friends.  In this revolution, instead of taxation without representation, the software rebellion known as Low-Code No-Code (LCNC) will no longer allow the oppressive corporate development teams of the past to tell us business users what our applications will look like or how they function. Gone are the days of having to learn C++ in college to create powerful business solutions. That’s right, this is our technology Declaration of Independence and I proclaim that everyone should be able to build a powerful software application without learning how to code!

But why would the bourgeoisie dev teams ever give up this powerful control without a fight? They would be giving away their secret knowledge.  Turning themselves into mere mortals like Zeus did Apollo.

It really boils down to two trends in software development:

  1. As early as 2011, companies and development teams started to realize they would never be able to keep up with demands of the business. According to Gartner, through 2021 market demand for software application development will grow at a rate of at least 5X faster than Corporate IT has the capacity to deliver. This is going to create a whole lot of upset executives dealing with weak growth that could be avoided.
  2. Business users needed a way to create their own solutions and quickly, this is the only ways to stay ahead of demand for vital solutions need for growing companies. According to MarketsandMarkets, LCNC Solutions are expected to grow from USD 4.3 Billion in 2017 to USD 27.2 Billion by 2022, at a CAGR of 44.5%.

Companies have started to realize that they would need more solutions than could ever be provided but Corporate IT and that they could tap into the labor pool of existing employees. We also started to see a shift in software development languages becoming user-friendly, “Programming isn’t about typing, it’s about thinking,” as said GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath.

Software companies started making drag-and-drop “Low-Code” platforms that allowed many of us to start thinking about how to develop our own solutions as early as 2011.  Like any early iteration, these early platforms had some challenges, like being developed by developers for developers (say that 5 times fast). They were too complex for most non-tech employees to really use.

The early platforms also only helped you build the code, but not test the code or deploy the solution. You had this great piece of software that as soon as you deployed it would create big problems for your systems.  Increasing the strain on IT resources.

As the revolution gained momentum, LCNC platforms matured and “Low-code”/ “No-Code” started to be used interchangeably. The later versions concentrated on taking “citizen developers” (as we were starting to be called, much cooler than non-dev) through the entire development cycle. Including vital steps like testing, debugging, and deployment. Which was paramount in importance for the rebel citizen developers to win their independence.

Looking forward, it is becoming very clear that LCNC platform solutions are here to stay.  These platforms have also re-defined what it means to be a developer.  Sure, devs can build you a custom solution from scratch but they also have become the keeper of the code in LCNC situations. They are maintaining these platforms so citizens can create their own solutions and take the burden off of them (smart developers, very smart). In the process, just like the British and Americans, Developers and Citizens have started to patch up relations.  IT teams are less stressed and able to concentrate on big initiatives, business teams get the solutions they need and no one is throwing tea into Boston Harbor.

Like the American Colonists, this new class of citizen developers now hold the power to form their own application destinies!  We have our own slice of Manifest Destiny to settle the solution frontiers.
