Workflow Automation – The Next Generation
The Status Quo:
Many organizations are spending six and seven figure budgets on Enterprise systems that integrate many aspects of the Enterprise including Workflow. Many of these systems are highly rated and include names such as: Appian, PegaSystems, SharePoint, IBM, Oracle, etc.
I recently spoke with a SharePoint architect at a Fortune 500 company who assured me that his company did not require change since his workflow development team was using Visual Studio, Webforms, and ASPnet to enable workflow in SharePoint, and that they were doing a great job. This is a classic case of where the IT department can’t see the forest for the trees, as another group in the same company was actively engaged in facilitating the workflow process by speaking with other vendors.
Every single day there are business users requiring data from a multiple reports which must be accessed by logging into several legacy systems or submitting a request to IT. If changes to the form or process are required, the IT department must be given timely notice to implement the modifications. This complex workflow solution may enable the status quo, but consider the use case for a manufacturing company required to file accident reports to regulatory agencies which are also modified for internal policies and procedures.
The Compliance Analyst who requested the form from I.T. thinks it looks great, and attempts to introduce it to the accident investigations staff that is less than thrilled about taking the time to learn and login to the legacy system, Then, the process is repeated when several fields in the form must be modified and the workflow of the new form must be changed.
This Status Quo environment is typical of many organizations that have failed to see that the Enterprise systems they have installed are perfect for their intended use, with the exception of the Workflow component , which often must be augmented with additional software to enhance usability. Let us explore the void in workflow by defining the Next Gen Workflow.
